The other night I was hunting and pecking in the dark on my laptop, because the keys always seem to deviate according to manufacturer, and I thought, "There must be a better way to determine what key I'm touching!"Enter Locator Dots. Designed for the blind, these small plastic bumps help you discern where you are on a surface. This product copy from a random retail site explains it nicely:
"Locator Dots™ are extremely durable reference points made of clear plastic and can be used almost anywhere to help you function more effectively by touch. The Locator Dots™ are close to a Braille dot in size. Mark the keys and buttons of keyboards, calculators, tape recorders, touch-tone telephones, printers, microwave ovens, thermostats, and keys on a key ring. Locator Dots™ can also be used to mark charts, graphs, maps, and globes."I stuck 2 on my enter key, one on F4 (for quick window killing) and 1 below my ALT keys for quick touch access. At $2 for a sheet of 20, these are a cheap way to immediately improve your touch typing skills! I bought them from SightConnection, and they shipped very promptly.
Wanting to take things to the next level, I bought a set of Braille Keyboard Stickers for $12.00. Now I am not saying I can fell the difference between 5 dots and 6, but there I can between 1 and 5. The set also includes arrows and numbers. I can't wait to apply them once I am done with my computer for a bit (they need time to set).
With a little bit of creativity you can apply these things everywhere! Another key spot is those damn USB ports on the side or back of your PC. With a dot as a guide you can slide the plug in quickly every time!
